A Review of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Avascular Necrosis

چکیده
Avascular necrosis (AN) is the death of trabecular bone and marrow, and is primarily observed in femur head. The pathogenesis is believed to be caused by the ischemia that occurs with the deterioration of micro-circulation in the femoral head.17 The annual US incidence of AN is between 10,000 and 15,000. The disease most commonly emerges in young adults, with an average age of 38 years. Prognosis is variable, and the treatment period may be long requiring hospitalization. Early diagnosis and appropriate surgery can reduce the risk of progression and achieve good results. The presence of femur-head bone marrow edema can be used in early diagnosis of AN. Surgical treatment options are include drilling, core decompression, fibular grafting, and osteotomy. Non-surgical treatment options include rest, weight loss, pharmacological agents, pulsed elecActa Medica Mediterranea, 2017, 33: 29

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a treatment for stage-I avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the head of the femur is a potentially crippling disease which mainly affects young adults. Although treatment by exposure to hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) is reported as being beneficial, there has been no study of its use in treated compared with untreated patients. We selected 12 patients who suffered from Steinberg stage-I AVN of the head of the femur (four bilateral) ...
متن کاملPrevention of avascular necrosis in displaced talar neck fractures by hyperbaric oxygenation therapy: a dual case report.
Talar neck fractures are a rare injury that account for less then 2% of all foot fractures. Displaced fractures are associated with an exceedingly high rate of avascular necrosis (AVN). The incidence of AVN following Hawkins Type 3 fractures of the talar neck may approach 100%, particularly if diagnosis and reduction are delayed. Severe cases may present as pain and disability of the ankle and ...
متن کاملTreatment of nervous system injuries by hyperbaric oxygen: a review of molecular mechanisms
Background and aims: The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of the treatment methods to treat many diseases and injuries such as decompression sickness, wound healing, carbon monoxide poisoning, thermal burns, and nervous system injuries. This article aims to review the possible mechanisms of the effectiveness of this treatment in neurological injuries according to the available studies...
متن کاملJaw avascular bone necrosis associated with long-term use of biphosphonates.
Bisphosphonates are currently used to prevent bone complications and to treat malignant hypercalcemia in patients with multiple myeloma, or bone metastases from breast and prostate cancers [1]. Within the last year we observed 10 patients who developed jaw bone necrosis while on treatment with zoledronic acid (Zometa; Novartis) or pamidronate. All the patients had breast cancer with skeletal di...

The present study aimed to review the general characteristics of 18 cases diagnosed with transient osteoporosis of the hip (TOH) in our hospital within a 3-year period and to present their follow-up results after conservative treatment. A retrospective evaluation was made of the treatment and results of follow-up of TOH cases using physical examination and laboratory findings, hip radiographs a...
